How it all began…
I have to admit, it’s been a crazy and fun ride and I’m proud to say that This, That & Other Things just passed its 1-year anniversary a few months ago. It sure has been an exciting (albeit a little too exciting!) experience and we’re so fortunate and grateful to have such wonderful and loyal customers.
As a customer of many stores myself, I often find it interesting to learn a bit more about various companies, who they are, what they’re about and how they started up. So to that end, for our 1st blog post, I’d like to give a little snapshot about This, That & Other Things.
First off, for those of you who have called or e-mailed, you’ve probably spoken to a (hopefully) pleasant woman named Alyson. I am Alyson, the owner and founder of the site, loving wife and mother of three kiddos: a very smart and opinionated 4-year-old girl, a wow-I-can’t-believe-you-look-so-much-like-your-dad 2-year-old boy, and a cuddly and cherubic 6-month-old boy.
About 2 years ago, with two young children at home, my husband and I were wondering how I could work at home, which would be a great way to stay at home with the kids. He was (and still is and might be forever!) in his residency (which is another whole fun ball of wax) and so things sort of fell on my shoulders. A home day-care? Maybe…but no. How about…an online store? Always something we were interested in but what could we do? What could we offer our customers that they couldn’t find elsewhere on the huge World Wide Web?
At the time of our daughter’s birth (4 years ago), we became very interested in organics and all-natural products (kids will do that to you!), yet prior to that time, we were pretty ignorant on the subject. Well, it just sort of hit us one day. Bam! “Why not offer organics in the store?” we thought. Sounded like a good idea. By no means have we been lifelong organic folks but given our “regular” past along with all that we have learned over the years, maybe we can offer something a bit different than most other organic stores. Maybe we could offer pure 100% organics, some vegan items, and some more eco-conscious items though not entirely organic themselves? That way we can appeal to more people, plus it would keep us honest, not being 100% granola ourselves…
From there, our store was born. Since we started This, That & Other Things, just over a year ago, we have tried to sample multiple brands of natural, organic and vegan products for moms, dads, other adults, babies and older kids. A sort of “one-stop natural shop” if you will. We keep our prices on the low side so people feel comfortable with us, knowing they’re not being ridiculously overcharged for items they could find elsewhere for cheaper. We wanted to take the “10-hour online shopping event for 1 item” out of the equation and offer a variety of items at a fair price. And we hope we’ve done that so far.
So there you have it. Just a little bit about our little store. I thank you for your patience if there have been any delays in orders or in returning emails (I try to be prompt!!). It has been crazy but awesome just the same. We’re so happy to have wonderful and loyal customers like you and are very open to suggestions. If you have specific items in mind that we don’t currently offer, please let us know!
I’ll be posting here as often as I can. But until the next time, thanks for checking us out!!!
Making your day a little greener,
Alyson
